Employment sector is a derived variable based on responses to questionnaire items A13, A14, and A15. In the data tables, the category 4-year educational institution includes 4-year colleges or universities, medical schools (including university-affiliated hospitals or medical centers), and university-affiliated research institutes. Two-year and pre-college institutions include community colleges, technical institutes, and other educational institutions (which respondents reported verbatim in the survey questionnaire). For-profit business or industry includes respondents who were self-employed in an incorporated business.
The diversity of our MA cohort creates an incredible group of people with whom to learn.

Studies rooted in communication, systems thinking, futuring, speculative design, design technology, ethics, and design research form the basis of the MDes. You’ll learn how to apply rigorous processes for documenting, analyzing, and understanding the past and present to propose more desirable systems and interactions for the future. The School of Design welcomes students who hold undergraduate degrees in non-design fields and have at least one year of professional experience to apply to our MA program. Whether you’re looking to infuse design into your native discipline or transition to design practice, our MA program will help you evolve professionally and personally. You can peruse master’s theses from students in the School of Design online at KiltHub. This intensive program provides a pathway to advanced industry opportunities, whether you have a background in design and media practice or if you wish to enter these fields from other professional backgrounds. The MDes prepares students for these roles by connecting technical rigor, design theory and social practice. Over three semesters, students develop core skills in design process, prototyping and communication, as well as a critical lens on technology and design through a sequence of debate-focused seminars. Graduates leave the program as engaged and responsive social practitioners with a deep understanding of the foundations of design and emerging technology and an informed awareness of people, contextual needs and societal impacts. Successful applicants will normally have achieved a high level of undergraduate degree (equivalent to a 1st or 2.1 grade in the UK system), in a relevant subject. Some universities may also ask for details of earlier qualifications completed at secondary level. Graduates with a Master of Design should be well-equipped to interpret cultural and societal needs and trends, in order to develop the most appropriate formats, designs and multimedia to achieve a desired sensation or function. The Master Plan Program is not limited to large subdivisions.
Please explore further information about the program’s four domains, MDes degree requirements, and related courses and faculty. And please join us for our Open House events to learn more about each of the domains and possible trajectories through them. Distinct from research in the sciences or humanities, design pedagogy involves highly interactive ways of thinking and learning that directly engage the technical, material, spatial, ecological, political, economic, and planetary dimensions of cultural life. Ultimately, MDes at the GSD challenges conventional ways of learning, and achieves a scope and diversity that are unmatched by any other design school in the world. Some European institutions award an undergraduate MDes degree. Like all European master degrees, this usually requires a four-year program with a research project or dissertation.
